The character “火” means “fire” or “flame”. Put two “火” in a vertical line, and a new character “炎” meaning “extremely hot” comes into being.

Useful Phrases:

Level One:
炎热 (yán rè)scorching, extremely hot

Level Two:
炎黄子孙(yán huáng zǐsūn)
It is said that Emperor Yan (炎帝) and Emperor Huang (黄帝) are two ancient kings that ruled people around the Yellow River areas and the Yangtze River area. Chinese would like to refer themselves as descendants of Emperor Yan and Huang.
